“Girls on December Nights” (poem)

We laid in bed

This time, we landed on my let-out couch

on my living room floor

nothingness that felt like something

and nothing at the same time

but as a Black girl,

sometimes, we take what we can get

because we are denied so much

so I made what you were willing to give me enough

and, I still do

I am very guilty

and content, for now

I know my worth

and I am a QUEEN

but I accept less than queenly shit sometimes

it’s life

it’s me.

Hopefully, GOD sees me trying.

I’m doing things he didn’t want for me

I have to make some changes

I have to keep sending prayers above

but that doesn’t mean he’s gonna answer every one

he might not…

so, I lay here with you

enjoying the moments

because they feel so sweet.

I know when you get up and put on your clothes and head out that door

it is back to reality

for a black girl like me
